VOD English is recruiting a foreign reporter for a six-month fellowship to cover the 2023 National Elections. This will be an exciting opportunity for a budding reporter or storyteller, as VOD English — one of the few independent news outlets in Cambodia — is planning new projects during the election. You will have the chance to work with a small but determined team of foreign and local reporters on the most important event in Cambodia this year; it will be challenging, but ambitious reporters and designers will have a lot of chances to pursue impressive stories or projects, meet fascinating sources and have fun along the way. These reporters will be focused primarily on election coverage, but there may be more opportunities to cover different stories.
This position is full-time and will involve some editing (maybe 10-30% of your time in the newsroom). So reporters should be either fluent in English (both native English or high-level speakers will be accepted). Proficiency in another language — especially Chinese, Vietnamese or Thai — would be an advantage but is not required.

Job Summary:
The Elections Associate Editor (Six Months, English) is responsible for reporting and editing features and enterprise stories related to the 2023 national election over a six-month project period.
Duties:
- Produce enterprise stories, features and investigations related to the 2023 national election
- Attend morning and afternoon editorial meetings.
- Gather information, materials, and interviews from sources to prepare features and enterprise articles related to the 2023 national election in consultation with editors.
- Edit stories submitted by Cambodian reporters.
- Work collaboratively to develop story ideas with other elections project members.
- Develop a strong understanding of the events and processes during the Election and take the lead in coverage within this topic.
- Consult with editors on newsworthy topics or events to research, analyse and draft reports.
- Submit to editors before deadlines.
- Follow VOD news operational guideline standard and News Editor or Managing Editor’s directions.
- Other duties as required
Job Requirement:
- Cambodian national. Women are encouraged to apply.
- Experience reporting and editing news and features in English, or experience that demonstrates capacity in critical thinking and writing.
- Demonstrated skill in writing concise and comprehensive news reports, or similar style of writing.
- Willing to pitch creative and insightful story ideas, and develop them with tenacity and determination.
- Capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively.
- Fluent English speaker capable of writing, reading and editing in English.
- Good team player.
- Good communication skills and relations with other journalists.
- Wider understanding of social issues.
- Capable of creative, critical thinking and speaking.
- Able to work flexible hours such as overtime, on roster, on holiday or on weekend, and travel to the provinces.
- A passionate and energetic team member with a genuine interest in working to develop independent and professional media, promote human rights and democratic governance.
